US–Asia time-zone overlap: what your 9-to-5 means in each hub
Last checked October 27, 2026.
The short version
- Dubai, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka are closest to the US East Coast: 9 to 10.5 hours ahead of New York in winter. A New York 9 AM is early evening there (6:00–7:30 PM). IANA tz database
- Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Jakarta are 12 hours ahead of New York in winter. A New York 9-to-5 runs 9 PM to 5 AM local.
- The Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Bali are 13 hours ahead of New York in winter. A New York 9-to-5 runs 10 PM to 6 AM local.
- None of these hubs change their clocks. Only the US does, so every gap shrinks by 1 hour from mid-March to early November. NIST
Clock-change dates to put in your calendar
US daylight saving time starts at 2:00 AM on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday of November (NIST). That means:
- Sunday, Nov 1, 2026: US clocks fall back. Your offshore team's meetings move 1 hour later in their local time.
- Sunday, Mar 14, 2027: US clocks spring forward. Meetings move 1 hour earlier for them.
Dates computed from the IANA time zone database.

How teams usually use these gaps
These are planning patterns, not rules:
- Full US-hours shift: the team works your 9-to-5, which is overnight local time in Southeast Asia. Simple for you; ask candidates up front whether they want that schedule.
- Overlap block: the team works a shifted day that ends during your morning. For example, a Bangalore day of 1:30 PM – 10:30 PM local overlaps New York 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM in winter (3 hours).
- Async handoff: work passes across the gap each day ("follow the sun"). This works best with written specs and a short daily window for questions.
Rule of thumb: South Asia and Dubai give the easiest partial overlap with the US East Coast; for the West Coast, every hub on this page needs either an overnight shift or an async setup.
